Abstract

Objective: Various factors affect students' mathematical thinking. In this regard, this research was conducted with the aim of investigating the effect of problem solving skills on mathematical thinking with the mediating role of attitude towards school in students.

Method: The statistical population includes all 9th grade female students of Aligudarz city, which was equal to 742 people. 253 people were selected as a statistical sample and the sampling method used was simple random. Heppner and Patterson's (1982) problem-solving skill questionnaire, Arabpour's standard mathematical thinking questionnaire (2018) and McCutch and Siegel's (2003) school attitude measurement were used. Also, the validity )reliability( of the research variables of mathematical thinking, problem solving skills and attitude towards school were equal to 0.947, 0.777 and 0.764, respectively. The obtained data were analyzed with skewness and kurtosis tests, factor analysis, structural equation method and Sobel test.

Results: Problem solving skills on attitude towards school, problem solving skill on mathematical thinking, attitude towards school on mathematical thinking, and solving skills on mathematical thinking with a mediating role of attitude towards school has a positive and significant effect. Conclusion: Mathematical thinking is improved by using problem solving skills and students' attitude towards school. As a result, the performance of students in this lesson is improved
